Cars, Trucks and Trains

Children have played with miniature versions of vehicles since ancient times. Nothing delights more than children using their imagination to discover the vroom! Vehicles are a big part of our world today so children like to mimic this role in their imaginative play too.

Dragging a small toy vehicle across a mat making ‘vroom vroom’ noises is a classic image of a child at play. Children can also discover cause and effect, by finding out what happens if they push or drop vehicles down ramps and along tracks.

With their wheels which encourage dragging, wooden toy vehicles can provide great enjoyment and help develop motor skills. Their simplicity also means that these vehicles can be played with in a great number of contexts. Toy vehicles can be played with independently, but children also love to race each other! This encourages children to share and negotiate (for example, deciding who gets the special red car), and lets them learn about friendly competition.
